The inauguration of the Private Public Partnership (PPP) between the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited and prominent Sri Lankan conglomerate, Aitken Spence PLC took place on 31st July 2013. The two companies joined forces – through FPCL’s subsidiary Ports Terminal Limited – to bring international best practice to the ports of Suva and Lautoka.
The inauguration ceremony was held at Kings Wharf, Suva where the Minister of Public Enterprises and Attorney General Hon. Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum was the Chief Guest.
This milestone event is expected to bring improvement in cargo operations which will bring about numerous direct benefits to Fiji Ports and its subsidiaries, and create new and enhanced advantages for the people of Fiji.
Aitken Spence which is one of Sri Lanka’s largest maritime logistics company will provide expertise in making the Ports in Suva and Lautoka world class, by infusing better efficiency and productivity and applying best practices to establish these as leading ports and maritime logistic centres in the Pacific. Having an efficient port is a basic need for any country. Shipping lines will have regular services only if their vessels are handled efficiently and turned around fast. Furthermore this means that the cost savings by shipping lines are passed on to its customers, which makes the price of goods cheaper.
The ports of Suva and Lautoka are strategically placed installations. Having an efficient port would be able to attract more vessels to call at these ports as well as make these ports a transshipment hub.
